Lecanora polytropa (Ehrh.) Rabenh.
     
  Deutschl. Krypt.-Fl. 2: 37 (1845). T: Verrucaria polytropa Ehrh., in G.F.Hoffmann, Deutschl. Fl.: 196 (1796). T: in Hercyniae, Germany [J.F.Ehrhart, Pl. Crypt. Exs. 294]; holo: GOET.  
     
  Thallus thin and inconspicuous or immersed in the substratum, or of dispersed granules, sometimes forming a small areolate crust with crenulate margins, yellowish green to greyish green or brownish green, epruinose. Soredia absent. Prothallus blackish brown. Apothecia sessile or slightly constricted at the base, 0.3–1.5 mm diam.; disc pale yellow to pale yellowish green or pale brown, not or very slightly pruinose; margin yellowish green, prominent, thin, entire and becoming flexuose, but often soon becoming excluded. Cortex hyaline, indistinct, inspersed with small crystals, 20–40 µm thick laterally and basally. Amphithecium lacking crystals, densely packed with algae; algal layer continuous below hymenium. Parathecium hyaline, lacking crystals. Epihymenium yellowish to pale brown, c. 10 µm thick, with numerous crystals soluble in KOH. Hymenium, subhymenium and hypothecium hyaline. Paraphyses sparingly branched and slightly thickened apically. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 9.5–15.0 × 4.5–7.0 µm. CHEMISTRY: Thallus and apothecial margin K–, C–, Pd–; containing rangiformic acid (major), usnic acid (major) and zeorin (minor).
     
  This cosmopolitan lichen grows on siliceous rocks. In Australia it is confined to subalpine and alpine areas of N.S.W., Vic. and Tas.
